Hi All

I replaced the rechargeable battery less than a year ago (Feb 2010) but a power cut last night left us sleepless at 4am,when it went off!

At best, the battery lasted four hours as we go to bed around midnight, but I think it' probably completely flat as the alarm goes off if the fusebox trips.

Could the system have a fault, perhaps one which means the battery isn't being recharged?

Just found something on the wonderweb, the unit set itself when the power came back on which apparently confirms the battery is at fault...so perhaps the fuse covering the battery has blown???

most likely a knackered battery.
get your supply taken off the RCd and put on it's own RCBO. i never wired them like that because constant tripping kills the battery life plus many more aspects with an alarm.

Thanks Rich, just wanted to confirm before I spend more money at this time of year!

Any recommendations for batteries...now wondering if the ebay sourced battery I bought last time was duff from the start.

I normally put my volt meter on battery to confirm it charging. With a 12 volt battery normally sits fully charged at under 13 volt around the 12.6 mark. On charge 13.2 to 14.8 depending on type of charger. I will measure before the power goes one and after the power goes on and as long as the voltage rises then all OK.
As to bell limited to 15 minutes I seem to remember by law. If going for more than 15 minutes then also a problem with bell box.
Many places now only allow flashing light on bell box OK can't really call it a bell box but you know what I mean the box on the wall outside.

Just had the cover off...the fault was obvious, somehow the positive battery terminal had come off!

But oddly, the battery is only a 1.2ah and I know I bought the same type that was in it before??? :dunno:

Anyway, it's showing 10v disconnected (probably not been on charge for months) and around 14v when charging so hopefully it'll recharge ok and do until I get a 7ah battery.

It is also worth noting that a Veritas will not set properly when it is charging a very flat battery. The flat battery tricks the Veritas into believing that there is a powercut!

Ok, thanks, didn't know that :-)

It's working fine now...with a 7.0ah battery, tight squeeze but it went in!
