Hi there

I'm fixing a curtain rail in an wall which has been sika plastered and have been advised to bung some mastic in the hole i'm about to drill before fixing.

The array of possible sealants is bewildering to a novice! Any suggestions what to use and where to get it from?

Thanks

Alex

Can anyone suggest something? Hope I'm not on the wrong forum, it was a dampproofer who suggested I do this.

Thanks!

Alex

any old silicon will do the job, its only gonna stop the screw rusting, its not like youre gonna get a geyser of water shooting out the hole..
its similar to 'tanking' behind galvanised electrical backboxes when rendering after a chemical dpc... it stops em rusting and water collecting in them...
wilkinsons, wickes, b&q, homebase, QD, any old hardware shop...
just white or clear silicon, doesnt matter what type, theyre all waterproof, just as long as you dont get acrylic sealant or decorators caulk which is water based not water proof....
the cheapest is likely to be high modulus acetoxy cure, but dont bother asking for it, theyll prolly just look at you like you just landed from mars, just ask em for the cheapest silicon they got...
pound - 1.50 a tube

CW - I was going for the record of most views without a reply and you've gone and spoilt it now!

Thanks! In time to fix it up this weekend! :thumbright:

hi lots, we do this after tanking walls, the mastic we use is from the company who supplies the tanking systems but its £12 plus a tube.

the idea is to recreate a seal on the tanking system when you have to screw something to the wall i.e rad hangers etc.

You need to drill the hole bigger and deeper than needed squeeze from the back of the hole and sit the plug in.

we dont use sika cavity drainage systems but the principal is the same i guess.

Thanks JME. The pricipal makes perfect sense. I've had advice on anything from a £1-£12 tube but as has been said it's not exactly got to block a geyser so I'm reckoning I'm safe with a bog standard silicon and a good dollop to create the seal all round the plugs.

cheers

Alex
