Quick question, with very little detail (actually, none).

Mate has told me he's got a combi boiler (triple checked - it's 100% a combi, he said. Hot water on demand and does heating). He's also got an unvented cylinder upstairs too - he said.

Is this mix possible, if so, how would it typically fit together?

He's got a rad that needs moving from one wall to the other in the same room. He's been quoted between 600 - 900 quid to supply and fit a 1200x600 double rad.

It's got a suspended floor, easy access and they wanted to do it in plastic for this price!!!!!!!!!!

Is there something special they are charging for? Is it the g3 ticket or is that not needed or is London truely that expensive?

Would need to see setup re combi / unvented but they are taking the p £600-£900. More nearer to the cost £ 300 - £ 400 depending on quality of radiator and time involved.

Where abouts in London?

Same rad or a new one.

You can have a combi serving some parts and a cylinder on a Y or S plan serving others.

Normal mix would be combi doing the kitchen/utility and the cylinder the bathrooms.

How big/many floors etc. Could be a good price or expensive and even about right.

Should add it would be at least a grand for the day and possibly another £150 for a night in the hotel.

Can't find the guys address....it's nowhere exotic or anything, good transport links etc, parking available. It's not the sort of place you have to park 40 miles away.

Room is 4m squared-ish, empty for the work with the carpet pulled up either side. All quotes were:

Cut floorboards either side
run plastic under the floors
mount new radiator - just a double panel plus, no names mentioned. Using existing danfoss TRV and lockshield from old one.
connect
"commision"

No making good of where old rad used to be or anything. Home owners responsibility. Scarily, no one has mentioned the plug socket the new rad position would cover.

He did mention the unvented was for the bathroom upstairs. House is a semi. Rad is downstairs.

Would this be a job he could undertake with me or does it need the boys in?

I'm happy with floors, connecting, mounting new rad, pipe work, etc - quite happy with combi boilers, pressurising, etc (no problems with the project I'm working on). It's just the UV bit in the mix that made me think twice - or does this not even come into the equation?

You don't need G3 to do this as you're not touching the UV just draining the heating side.

After your recent experience it'll be a piece of pizzle

Such a simple job I'm surprised you even asked.

Off to bed in a bit, but this has got me wondering........

What do you all have in your own homes? Is there a golden ticket of heating/power for showers, etc or is it really down to cost/simplicity/flow rates where you live and so on?

Lots of people seem to hate combis, but I've had them and loved them - yet lots of my mates have cylinders, tanks in the loft, pumps/valves that get stuck, etc.......?

:salute:

I have a combi, only have showers so no point heating a cyinder.

Fitted a combi with a cylinder at my Daughters, combi serves the kitchen/utility and the cylinder the bath.

Combi replaced my old back boiler & cylinder in my place, and did the same at my son's house.

Will be at my place too soon I hope!
Any problem / disadvantage filling a bath off a combi??

only advantage I can think of is if/when the combi breaks, you can use the immersion on the cylinder?

Depends what the pressure and flow rates is but you could be waiting a while to fill a bath in some circumstances.

I suppose it would take a good 30+ minutes for me to fill a bath if I had one.

Just wanted to update, jobs a good'un, if not a long day!

Thanks to Scruff too for the quick answer of a question I had.... :thumbright:

The room really was cold on the Window side.....the existing rad was at the oppersite end of the room, next to the internal walls - didn't do anything to help at night.

Old Rad:

TRV/Lockshield looking a little green around the gills.....

Rad slightly upsized to 1200 wide...this is it's new home, under the window:

Oddly, when the jobs were quoted from the pro's, no one mentioned the socket....guess it was going to be covered! Luckily when under the floor, there was tons of cable, so we just surface mounted it with the other boxes, a bit of slimline trunking to follow shortly.

Rad mounted and connected up....

All tested OK, all rads bleed nicely....no air left in the system - but it didn't get hot. Had a goosey gander at the pipework under the house ans saw this was the last in the run.....some of the other rads were hotter than the sun, so got balancing from top to bottom. With the power of touch, we went round and wound down the lockshields in at various location and boom....instant heat

All was running well, so I went under a final time, insulated all my new pipes (most of the old had none....he's going to go back and do that later) and the rad got inferno hot - job done! :thumbright:

Final thing:

Job done, time for a drive home! Long but good day!
