I am in the process of doing up my house, and am replacing the carpets. The new carpet I have picked out is felt-backed. The chap who measured the place up said I could get away without underlay. Is the absence of underlay likely to be noticeable to visitors or likely to cause the carpet to wear quicker? It is just me in the house, but I don't want to scrimp on no underlay if it is going to have an effect if I come to sell the house. (A second concern is that underlay might require the doors to be shortened.)

"Get away with..." is the important bit - the guy wants you to pay extra for it but it isn't necessary.

Felt-backed carpets do not require underlay, do not (necessarily) require doors to be trimmed and will not wear out any faster or slower. Go for it without.

Underlay (which basically stems from the time when carpets had 'hard' backings (you don't want me to explain the history of carpet manufacture, do you) now, unless you are going for the proper gear, only serve to add soft-underfoot-comfort.

As far as resale is concerned, by that time the purchaser will want to replace anyway as you will have tipped red wine & curry all over it.....
