Following on from fitzy thread in P&D has anyone else tried to sue you for no reason. Here's mine (only one so far!)

A few years ago, a local 'builder' asked me to do some leadwork on a bay window so I had a look, gave him a price and he accepted. Did the job and everything was fine and got paid. A few months later I was working on a house right opposite the leadwork one and the lady of the house (who is also a town councillor) popped out to ask me for a card because she might have some work for me. Next minute I get a court summons - turns out the 'builder' did about 50% of the work, she paid him all the cash and he buggered off to Spain.

I went to the small claims court and the councillor lady gave the judge all her evidence about how the 'builder' had done a runner and the judge asked her why has she taken me to court because so far she hadnt mentioned me. Her reply was that she spotted me and knew I did some work for him. The only words the judge said to me was "how much do you charge for a days work?" I told him, he doubled it and told her she would have to pay me that for all the wasted time I had spent there. She went that red I thought she would explode!

Bloody councillors (also read politicians) try to stitch everyone up with out knowing the facts.

About 6 months before the work on her house her son (didnt know it was her son when I accepted the job) wanted a re-roof on his shop in Llandudno (5 storeys up). Applied to the council to get the scaffold (because it would be on the pavement) and they gave the green light. Arranged everything with the son and the scaffold company to get everything sorted so I could start work and it was all fine (which was a mid week start). First day I am up on the roof stripping it and the lad that worked for me said someone is tapping the scaffold like mad. Looked over and it was councillor Hitler - went down and she told me that the Victorian Extravaganza starts the next day (that she organises) and she wanted the scaffolding down by the end of the day. I told her where to go and that I have a months permit from the council for the scaffold. That night I had a call off the son saying "mummy was upset" (how many grown men call their mums mummy?) next day I turned up and put some bunting on the scaffold and told him to take it or leave it. Got the job done (and shimmied the scaffold over and did the shop next door too)

This site used to be hosted with 1&1 on a dedicated server-
server-downtime-t9447.html

The site was constantly crashing and their support was lousy. One day I got in from work at 6am and was due back in work at 2pm (known as a quick return, we did this every block of seven days on the shifts we were working). The server was down so I telephoned their 24 hour support and explained that the server was down and that I had to go to bed as I had to get up again for work. They assured me that they would fix the server problem.

When I awoke at 11:30am the server was still down, so I had to call them again to fix it.

Anyway the server was constantly going down so I found a new host and moved the site, then I cancelled my server with 1&1 through their control panel (strangely I did not get a confirmation email). The next month they took another months hosting money from my account, so I called my bank who said they could not stop the payments, so I had to cancel my debit card to stop them taking more money.

Then I started getting debt collection letters from them, for a few weeks then it escalated to solicitors letters threatening to sue. Luckily I have a friend who is a solicitor and he took care if it for me. I think if it had gone to court they would of ended up paying me damages for the amount of times the server was down as it was clearly documented in the forum each time it crashed!

After checking the internet it seems common practice for them to take money after you have cancelled the server and then try and scare you with a debt collection agency/solicitor.
