Hi there, I have about 5 Lalandi (spelling) tree's that i want to get rid of as their near drains and are about 2 stories high and any advice would be appreciated in getting rid of them and the stumps, I got a quote for £700 but thought it was a bit steep, lidl's are selling an electric chain saw and I'm temped to get one and do it myself.
Thanks in advance

I recently had a 30 odd foot Willow and a 45 foot Eucalyptus felled by the experts. £500 give or take some loose change, but I ended up with the stumps treated, the site cleared and all the stuff taken away.
I thought about doing it myself, but it was the getting rid of it all which put me off.

I wouldnt bother with an electric chainsaw for something that big. I have a B&D electric chainsaw and all its really good for (apart from the bin) is chopping up small logs - the biggest thing I have chopped down with it is a 6ft conifer. You will really need a petrol chainsaw.
If you havent taken down a tree before it might be an idea to get someone else to do it. I have a neighbour (who has a log burner) and a couple of petrol chainsaws who comes around, chops down the big stuff and takes it away for free for his winter log supply. Ask around see if there is anyone round your neck of the woods that would do the same.

sounds expensive...if you or someone else you know are feeling strong, lop off the lower branches, you should then be able to "rock" the tree back and forth and pull it out, rootball and all...

It's the getting rid of which costs these days.
Waste carriers licence = £160 for 3 years. Green waste tipping = £25 / quarter ton.

Five Leylandii trees that high produce an enormous amount of green waste. If they have a shredder it will reduce the mass but the logs from the bulky trunks and limbs need to be sawn up to make them more manageable. The logs have a value if you can contact a few locals with log burners they would be glad to take them off your hands I am sure. £700 sounds a lot but it is a lot of work and you need the skill and big kit to handle it. If you can minimise the waste disposal aspect I am sure the price will come down.

Confirm what everyone else is saying. I do tree surgery amongst many other things. Laylandeii produce so much volume of stuff to dispose of that that is by far the biggest part of the job unless you have a big enough garden and will let them burn it onsite? Even then if they have to carry it to the other end of the garden to burn it it is still a big part of the job. My mum has an open fire and can use logs so I have a use for them but the ratio of stuff that can be burned indoors on an open fire to that which can't is so low for laylandeii that its hardly worth bothering with in that respect.

Mike is spot on about all the green waste. My neighbour felled 4 trees for me last week and there is tonnes of the stuff. Luckily I have plenty of room to burn it but everytime I make a fire it bl**dy rains!

My neighbour (who cut the trees down) took all the big logs and anything else that was less than 2" wide he has left. Even though he took all the big stuff I still have tonnes of branches and stuff left to get rid of
