My mother has moved into a flat which is entirely lined by plasterboard (it used to be a grand old hospital).

She’d like to make some modifications in the kitchen around a strange small alcove that’s in there.

My presumption is it’s an old fireplace which could in theory be opened up. Is there anyway to work out what’s behind the plasterboard before we rip it off ?

Attached is a phot of the layout, you can see the layout before the dry lining was done, and you can see the alcove (far right of picture); with a weird small box next to it, any idea what that could be ?

The room just off picture is next doors kitchen

Any help / advice appreciated !

Looks to be an old chimney stack, IF it is at all structural/ removal of interior walls/ then you'll need the leaseholders permission to make any changes.

Yup it’s definitely an old chimney breast which has been opened up in the floor above (about 6 foot wide) whereas my mothers alive is about 3 foot by 3 foot
