I went to get my compressor set up today and I am a bit confused over what I need to do to get an air hose connected. The compressor has two quick release fittings as outlet feeds but my hose has a screw on end rather than a bayonet fitting that would slot in.

Can anyone advise on how I should proceed please? Do I need to buy specific fittings to remake the existing hose end into a bayonet type or are there pre-made hoses with the fittings already on that I have not spotted? So I need bayonet one end and quick release the other.

I'd be inclined to remake the hose, (unless you can use it for anything else). There's different types of QR fittings: a friend of mine has a Lidl/Parkside compressor and his uses a different fitting to mine which are the PCL fittings.

I expect it to be a Euro style QR (It May be a PCL) with a 1/4 BSP to screw on to the hose

I bought some "Euro" fittings from China off eBay a few months back to have some spares, as the one female Euro fitting was playing up (an o ring fixed that)
The ones that came weren't like anything I'd seen or could even find online. They looked good quality, but were subtly different to the ones in the pics on the selling page.
Money back no problem, but worth knowing.

As above, you can get 4-5 different types of fitting - I swapped out all my fitting for PCL but the main 2 are PCL (long) And euro (stubby)

The compressor should of had 2 fittings with it (usually a bag cable tied somewhere)

If you have a machine mart local they stock fittings (usually behind the counter)

BTW, the 2 outlets - 1 is tank pressure and the other is regulated

If your not in a hurry I will have a look in my box of bits

Thanks guys, I realise now that the tube I have has a captive nut on a crimped on fitting to the hose. I have to match up into a bayonet type connector. Would this be it? https://www.screwfix.com/p/pcl-aca2593- ... read/5763h

The problem is you don't know what's on the compressor IMHO change the socket on the compressor as well then you know you have standard fittings - most places have pcl fittings in stock

Be aware the manifold on the compressor it is usually cast and they can crack if you over tighten them (don't ask)

ps. use gas ptfe (its a lot thicker) on your threads

Thanks Bob, I have some gas Ptfe. I will play around with it and see how I get on when I have been to Screwfix.

My compressor arrived today
I've only taken it out of the box so far.

The carry/move handle is broken - not a good start.

I may still try it out before ringing Aldi

I'll post a pick of the fittings on the compressor, from what i've read PCL is the one to go for, so if fit those on the compressor, i'll then know to only buy things with PCL fittings.

I'm sure i'll be back on here for advice and links to toolstation/screwfix :)

When we had a workshop business we specified CEJN because they have larger bores than PCL, so greater air flow.

Though there are apparently others, the two main standards for connection are either PCL or Euro, both come in male and female (spigot plug to socket sealed when disconnected) and also with male or female, BSP threads opposite. You can also get them with grooved ends to fit with crimps or hose clips into a hose. Although above mentions tool suppliers, all are readily available on that auction site, A-Zon, motor factors and (in my case) the tool guy at the car boot sale/sunday market.

You just have to decide which standard (pcl/euro) you are going to stick with and convert any that don't comply, not expensive or rocket science.

May be worth noting to the unitiated that you an also get whip hoses, which absorb vibration. This is a pre-made connector that may be, for instance, a male or female threaded end to fit the tool, 300mm of hose, then a pre-made spigot (pcl or euro) to go into your outlet.

Note, like electrics, female ends always terminate outlets to seal when disconnected & open male ends always terminate inlets.

Using a whip hose is a H&S recommendation against vibration causing a disconnect
might even be mandatory now :dunno:

Also supposed to reduce the incidence of cracks forming around the inlet in the tool due to repeated coupling/uncoupling where the connector is mounted directly on the tool. I'm told

OK, so I've unpacked the compressor and had a little look at it.
Observations/problems/questions
  • As mentioned earlier, the transport handle is broken, Any idea if Aldi will just replace the handle, or the whole unit, or offer some money off? Probably prefer the latter and remove the remnants of the handle assuming warranty still valid. Can't see me wheeling it around anywhere, but then I haven't used it yet :dunno:
  • Manual says to check the oil level before switching it on, but not clear what the min/max levels should be on the window. I did find mention later in the manual about it being below the red dot, which it was.
  • Once checked, I switched it on - that made me jump: it is pretty loud when you're right next to it.
  • The transport oil cap popped off when I switched it on. I replaced it with the supplied red one which stays put. Not sure why there are the two separate caps, must be a good reason though.
  • The air filter hole had a cap on it, but the compressor did seem to still be working with the air inlet blocked. I did end up removing the cap and fitting the air filter.
  • As I don't have any tools yet, I just released the safety valve to see that air does indeed come out :-)
  • Instructions say the switch is pre-set to 6-8, however as mine just reached 8, the safety valve opened, so the switch didn't get a chance to shut off. I adjusted the screw by the power switch slightly down which seems to have solved this.
  • Do people normally turn the switch off when not in use? I imagine that if I had a small leak somewhere it would just keep kicking in if I didn't switch it off. I know the instructions say I should but instructions generally say lots of things that people never really do :lol:
  • Do people normally empty the air whenever it isn't in use? (overnight/weekdays)
  • Maybe I missed it, but didn't see how to empty any water out from the receiver.
  • If I buy this set Image What else do I need from toolstation to be up and running? is it the two connector/couplers in that item description?

Probably enough questions for now :-)
