Please help. I am brand new to DIY and want to make sure I am not being ripped off.

We have sliding mirrored closet doors in our bedroom. Last year the mirror on one door cracked and the maintenance staff took the doorvaway. We did not bother replacing it.

I always assumed the doors were made of wood. Last week I decided to replace the closet door and telephoned my landlord for a cost estimate.

He claims my closet doors are actually custom made aluminum doors and the cost to replace just the cracked mirror is USD 500 ! He further claims that we cannot go with a local chain home improvement company but with a smaller vendor that he contracts with to replace the cracked mirror.

First question (probably sounds dumb to the experts but serious question) -- how do I know for sure if my closet door is aluminum as landlord claims or wood or any other material ?

Secondly, most online sites quote that much for door and the mirror. The landlord claims that the mirror dimensions are 36 x 72 x 1/4". Should just the mirror cost almost USD 500 (along with labour to replace it) ?

How difficult / laborious is this task of replacing the cracked mirror to it's closet door ?

And if I am unable to DIY myself is there any reason we can't go with a chain home improvement store like Home Depot but have to go with landlord's "approved contractor" ?

Please help. Thank you all so much in advance. Much obliged.

This is a UK based forum, and I'm guessing you are in the USA?
