Pffft, next up will be House of Fraser, closely followed by Debenhams...

Amazon are to blame for a lot of it.

I needed to look up summat at toolstation earlier. googled "toolstation" and the first listing was an advert from Amazon saying looking for "toolstation?"

Strangely John Lewis are going strong .

They had a very poor business model. Many items were overpriced. It doesn't take much to interent search the cheapest price. Last time I ordered something it took 5 days to arrive. That's not competative at all.

I think the only things I ever bought from Tesco direct were a couple of laptops, the prices were slightly higher than other places but I was able to use a clubcard boost type thing to get a very good discount. Other than that they were overpriced and slow as Argyll says.

As to HoF we are loosing our store here, it will be the 3rd big department store to go. One lay empty for almost 10 years (now student housing), the old BHS is still empty with no signs of re-use and the HoF store was probably the largest store in the city, that will now be empty and no-one will take that on.

Can't say it surprises me though, I honestly can't think of a single thing I bought in there, even during big sales everything was either not to my taste or out of my budget/cheaper other places.

M&S in trouble too, I have said it for years, shops these days just don't know to appeal to younger folk and only cater to the old folk with all the money, a fast declining market.

Our one in Falkirk is closing. It must be at least three years since I was last in that shop. Internet shopping (if done right) has a lot to do with this.

The High St is changing. You'll see in years to come many of the large retailers moving to retail parks where land rent fees from private company's are much lower than with the local councils increasingly and astronomically high rent fees each year.

Yeah I think you are right Our mothercare is closing it's expensive town centre mall shop and building their own much larger store on an out of town retail park. Says a lot about the greed of our council if that is what make financial sense for them.

Seems like Amazon won't stop until they've achieved world domination. Did you know you can purchase plumbing and handyman services from them now:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/b/ref=nav_shopall_gno_vas_plumbing?ie=UTF8&node=14069298031. I hope this turns out to be a massive flop.

I can't abide this corporate intrusion into every aspect of human existence. They won't be happy until everyone is either a)out of business, or b)working for them.

Strangely they've opened a NEW M&S store in |Fort William and they're currently building a new one in Oban. Of course, they are both FOOD outlets as we all have to eat!

T'internet and ridiculous rates charges by councils are the likely suspects.
