I usually use Zinsser BIN as an MDF primer. I used my HVLP spray gun once but I had to dilute the paint so much to get it to spray I had to do multiple coats and the clean up took ages. BIN is a shellac based paint that need methylated spirits as a solvent and cleaning agent. By the time I had ponced around it is quicker to use a roller.

It depends what the solvent base in. Water based paints are obviously water but oil based paints tend to have white spirit as a solvent and, as I said earlier, BIN has methyated spirits as the solvent. The skill is getting the viscosity right and you need a viscosity cup to check the paint is right for spraying. I found this video which saves a thousand words https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gWRCkM_Yfo
