I notice that some light fittings say that they are not dimmable. What makes a light dimmable, is it generally the transformer (if present) or can it be the lamp itself. If so what’s the reason why some energy saver lamps other 230V GU4’s, are not dimmable

Can I assume that you always need a transformer for 12V lamps and never need one for 240V. Is that correct?

Apologies for the numpty questions! Trying to find a wiki guide that gives an overview of lighting types, fittings and compatibility,

Last sentence first, yes you need a tranny for 12v lighting, thats because your mains is 230v ish

Low energy lamps are not dimmable. Some selv (Low voltage) are dimmable, some are not. (Depending on the type of tranny)

Hope this helps...

Good man wino :thumbright:

Actually just on the low energy bit I did notice this Low energy dimmable lamp, but there doesn’t see to be many varieties alright!.

I wonder what happens if I actually put a low energy lamp on a dimmer switch, is it safe or does it just reduce the lamp life significantly.

May work, but will destroy the dimmer in no-time. Others will be along later who are better informed...
