Been having a few problems with my central heating system lately and just wanted some advice! I have a conventional sealed system it's an ideal classic and I have a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard. My system is 11 years old. The latest event has been the switch that switches the boiler off in the airing cupboard went and BG replaced it under my homecare agreement. They advise a magnaclean for £265.00 would be needed as if I kept having problems they could refuse to come out!!!! I have only had problems over the last 3 months and the major problem has been they replaced the prv and pressure valves with different parts (they could not get the exact parts) and I have had a constant slow drip inside the cupboard from outside the parts at the joints. They come and say they have stopped it then the same evening I have a container full of water under the pipe. They are now fixing an expansion vessel over my cylinder. I pay them £35.00 a month, but they seem unable to stop a leak from outside a pipe!!!! Do I need a magnaclean on an 11 year old system???

Sounds just like a typical BG blackmail. ::b

Any leak will mean that fresh water is being added, and therefore sludge and corrosion is just around the corner.
A magnaclean is worth having fitted on any system irrespective of age, but get an independent to install it for no more than £150.00.

Can't comment on the expansion vessel without more info, on what it's connected too and why, a pic would help.

As for paying £35.00 a month, that seems very expensive.

The £35.00 is for plumbing and electrical work as well as central heating. I will put the magnaclean job on ********* and hope I can get someone to fit it in London for around the price you mentioned. Here is a picture of where the vessel will be fitted!

I would avoid My Hammer where possible, unless you want to take a chance on every chancer in town knocking on the door.

The £150.00 is the going rate for an RGI/plumber to fit one, in most parts of the country.

Where abouts are you roughly, there may be a someone on the forum that can give you a price.
