I moved into a new house at the beginning of Nov, the property has an Ideal Icos boiler with a hot water tank in an airing cupboard upstairs along with a lifestyle LP112 program timer, drayton MA1 mid position actuator and a Honeywell thermostat in the hall.

We noticed that something wasn't quite right when we came home and the heating was on when it wasn't set to come on till an hour later.

It has been switching itself on at night when the program timer is set to off and also sometimes I notice it has come on after having a shower, with the program timer off.

There is a ticking noise from the airing cupboard which I think is coming from the mid position actuator, I took a look at it and it ticks when in the middle position which I guess is heating and hot water on together. But is silent when in either of the other two positions.

Am I right in thinking that I need to get someone in to replace the mid position actuator, or could it be something else?

I have no experience with this type of heating system as I had a combi boiler in the first place I lived in, which worked perfectly for the eight years I was there.

If you unclip the actuator and check the shaft is free, then you just need to change the actuator MA1.

Quite a simple diy job, provided you isolate the electrics, and snip the wires off, leaving a short piece in place, then you can change each wire matching the old colour without getting them mixed up.

Thanks for the quick reply, I am tempted to change it myself, do I need to buy the exact same make and model or can I get a different one? Not sure about the reliability of these ones.

Also tempted to update the lifestyle LP112 as it's the older version that only has two timed programs, when I select once for the hot water it stays on till the end of the second timer which doesn't end till 8.30 pm instead of Just for the first timer setting which is an hour long, which is all I want for hot water ideally.
