hi all

i have been asked to be the companys firstaider and in jan i have to go on a 3day course,
has anyone done the course before? care to give me insite to what i will be doing/difficulty etc so im not going in blind.

It's impossible to fail, so don't panic.

The main things you will need to know is how many hours a day you can book as time, and what expenses you are entitled to wrt lunch money etc.

so is it basic thing then that the hse has developed to make money?

its 3days at 6hours and im getting payed normal 8hours and all refreshments are included

After you have completed it, although the cert is valid for three years, the HSE recommend that you do a short refresher course every year. So at least one day off for that.

I have done the first aid at work course with the st. Johns ambulance.

I'm not sure if my first one was three or five days as it was about 5 years ago. I have been on a refresher since then.

It's good to know what they teach you and these types of courses should be more available as they could help to save someones live.

On the St. Johns one you learn how to bandage wounds and sling a broken arm and how to give CPR etc.

At the end you have to have a test which involves giving CPR to a dummy.

The more folk who know first aid, particularly CPR, the better - and its not just at work.

Hillsborough is a case in point, the vast majority of folk who died had been rescued, but not enough people realised the importance of keeping an airway open hence the apalling death toll.

Just finished my FAaW on Thursday, a hell of a lot is crammed in the 3 days (which used to be 4).

I found it quite boring (and no babes on the course either). The course concentrates on CPR, strokes and cuts and what to do.

The assesment at the end of the course has 2 independant assesors, you have to perform CPR to a manikin, they will ask you what job you do and make the scenario relevant, they will ask questions such as what would you do if someone has a heart attack etc. You will also have to do a dressing on a class member and answer some more questions.

You will get your certificate in 4 to 6 weeks.

Three days, i did the 1 day course a while back and that was boring but three days i'd want to be a qualified doctor for that!

Its a good thing to know, you might save a life one day! You would be well proud of yourself then.

when I lived in Belfast, I read a story in the local rag of an eldery man who had a heartattack in the local shop. Some lads renovating a house were in the same store getting a sandwich, one of them spotted what was happening and acted straightaway, knew CPR and how to massage the heart and saved the mans life. Top bloke!

Learning first aid is a great you may save your own life or a family member or a member of the public and you are getting paid to do it not bad.

I did the 3 day St Johns one last year ,was a bit drawn out to be honest but a good course though
Get paid 50 quid every 6 months from work for it ,havent even used a plaster yet
