Hi all, hope someone can help with my problem.

We moved into this new build house 5 years ago, all well with toilets until yesterday.

After flushing the toilet the cistern won't stop filling and waste water is going down the overflow and into the toilet pan. It is a SIAMP. The plastic float does not rise when the water reaches it, instead it just stays down so the water keeps coming into the cistern. However, I can raise the float quite easily by hand and when I do that and apply quite a lot of manual pressure the flow of water stops.

The float doesn't seem to be catching on the side of the cistern so I'm a bit baffled.

I have no plumbing knowledge but would like to have a go at sorting it out myself if poss.

All advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Can you remove the float from the cistern and check that it actually does. Float, that is.

It could have a hole in it which has caused it to fill with water.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I follow your logic but I can tell without dismantling it that it's not full of water.

We have an identical toilet upstairs which works fine. On that one I can pop the float down with my finger and when the cistern fills the float pops back up, as you would expect. With the faulty one the float doesn't move when the water rises, it just sits there and the cistern keeps filling. I can pull the float up with my hands and by exerting pressure (ie pulling it up) I can stop the cistern filling. If I then flush the toilet the cistern doesn't fill unless I push the float down again.

You would think the float was snagging against the cistern to stop it rising and falling but it's clear of the cistern.

Any more ideas folks?

Probable wants a new one.

Have you stripped it down to see if there's something broken.

Thanks for that.

Will have a go at that in the morning. Have no knowledge of plumbing whatsoever. Will shut off water supply, flush cistern, then try to work out how to dismantle it. Any tips/advice on how to do that will be very welcome!

Never had the pleasure of taking one to bits but it should be obvious if you take your time.

Inside the valve (depending on the type of valve you have got) you will find a diagphram (excuse spelling) washer. You may find this has lost it's flexibility and bulges outwards. Changing that may be the answer. :-)

Take a look here - http://www.siamp.co.uk/siamp_installation.php

Looks to be lots of useful info on the SIAMP website.

Just a quick post to say that I dismantled it following the instructions given on the Siamp website you directed me to and it worked!

Massive thanks to all who replied. I'm sure this wouldn't be a big deal to you experienced DIY'ers but not being someone who has ever done any successful DIY I'm pretty chuffed to be honest.

Thanks again.

:thumbleft: :thumbright:

Thanks for getting back to us and letting us know how you got on.

There are few things that annoy me more than giving someone a bit of help and then having them disappear without trace. :cussing: :cussing: :cussing:

Roll on your next DIY problem!

I have a similiar problem to the one above. Water wil not stop running into the toilet. I have done all of the above but still no change.
What I have done though is adjust the height of the float and made matters worse and I cannot get it back to what it as, until I messed about with it the water ran into the toilet for about 30 seconds.

Can anyone help.
