I didn't know you lived in the Victorian era Colin!!

I was born in 1947 and although this isn't victorian my parents big house and cottages were on gas only with coal fires; I well remember the gas lamps with mantles looking like small golf balls?

Strange how now we have power and water cuts but I've never known a gas cut?

Kind regards, Col.

'47 was the time when the big push was on to get the "National Grid" in place and get AC power to all the country places. My dad was an engineer in charge of a team putting up lines in Worcestershire and Shropshire in the Winter of '47.

Before then it was mostly DC, and was only available in towns where the power was generated due to the transmission losses.

My wife's Gran lived out in the wilds of Lincolnshire, she had electric, but no running hot water, and a privy way down the garden right up until 1975 (she was 77 then) when the wife had a go at the landlord (titled local nob) and got him to put a bathroom extension built on the back.
