Hi,
I am renovating my property and have had the bathroom and new shower room walls dry lined (to hide pipes) and skimmed over. Can I tile straight onto the new skimmed plasterboard wall or do I need to PVA it first and then tile over it? I have heard somewhere that this depends on the adhesive bought?? I have also heard that if the PVA gets wet then it becomes "live" the same as when you hang wall paper. I am very confused!!!

Any help would be most grateful

since you have had the walls skimmed you are limited to tile size etc...

plastered walls will only take 20kg per m2 (16kg for tiles and 4kg for adhesive an grout)

as for pva thats a big no..no..

dependant on tiles/sizes ..if tiles under 250/300mm then you will get away with a tubbed adhesive(bal white star etc)this will already have the acrylic primer in it..

if your going for large tiles(again be wary of the weight per m2) you will need to use a bagged adhesive and an acrylic primer such as bal apd or mapei primer g etc..prime wqll proir to appliying adhesive.

p.s let that plaster skimm dry out, before you tile fix over it...

Agreed. Personally, I wouldnt use a tubbed adhesive on any tile larger than 200 x 250.

The tiles i have are 300x600 for the walls. I am not tiling all of the walls, just the shower cubicle and around the bath. So just to confirm I need to prime the area where i will be tiling with an acrylic primer and then use a bagged adhesive rather than a ready mixed tub?

The tiles that will be used are Porcelain. Does this make a differnece?

How long should I leave the walls before priming and tiling. The plaster has been on for about 1 week but I cant seem me tiling the walls for another 4-5 weeks.

Just had a look for the mapei primer. Would this one in B and Q be ok?

Yes that looks ok................................buy the one which the shop recommend to complement the adhesive you buy. I am not one for mixing and matching products. I prefer to keep to same make, through the range.

Make sure the adhesive is suitable for porcelain and correct colour for the tile.

Hopefully you haven't fallen victim to buying cheap and ending up with Chinese manufactured tiles............if so, take them back for a refund as you will have no end of problems.

By the time you intend to tile the walls will be fine. Don't forget to buy a cleaner and sealer for those tiles.

Buidfix is the retail name for Mapei products in B&Q - The trade name for that primer is 'Primer G'
