 Post subject: the boys homework

this is my son's homework question, it's got me confused


George has a piece of wood that is 10 cm long
every time he makes a cut with the saw he loses 3mm of wood

c) George wants to cut the piece of wood up into parts of different lengths
he wants each part to be a whole number of centimetres
he wants as many parts as possible
(i) how many parts will he end up with?
(ii) what will be their lengths?

1 @ 4cm long
1 @3cm long
1 @2cm long

1mm left over

or he can have

1 @1cm long
1 @2cm long
1@ 3cm long

31mm left over

sorry for the tardy reply...on a dodgy "Dongle" keep loosing t'internet

1st cut 1cm =10 mm +3mm= 13mm.....

2nd cut 2cm=20mm +3mm =23mm...add together =36mm

3rd cut 3cm=30mm+3mm =33mm...add together =69mm

add the results.. subtract from your 10 cm/100mm.....you can't then make a 4cm cut, because of the 3mm....

so he has 1x1cm, 1x2cm 1x3cm bits of wood......assuming he has a stesdy hand :lol:



:oops: Damn, beaten to it....bloddy dongle :cussing:

1cm

so in mm including the loss for the cuts-

13mm
23mm
33mm
43mm
53mm
63mm
73mm
83mm
93mm
103mm
113mm

= 697mm

70 - 3 = 67cm
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 12 = 67cm

If you get 11 pieces or bits, that is the same as me, although the working out is a bit different, especially the 10+12 bit :lol:

My maths went a bit pair shaped and I put 697 :oops:

Still 11 pieces though :wink:

well if it had been 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11 it would only have added up to 66 not 67 as required

4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12+13+18
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 15=70 +10x3mm=30= 100or 10cm

remember you only have 10 cuts between 11 bits this is what they expect you to get wrong :wink:

Length of plank =700mm

1cm + 3mm cut leaves 687mm
2cm + 3mm cut leaves 664mm
3cm + 3mm cut leaves 631mm
4cm + 3mm cut leaves 588mm
5cm + 3mm cut leaves 535mm
6cm + 3mm cut leaves 472mm
7cm + 3mm cut leaves 399mm
8cm + 3mm cut leaves 316mm
9cm + 3mm cut leaves 223mm
10cm +3mm cut leaves 120mm = 12 cm with no cut needed
12cm
