Using algebra:

Let D be the diameter of the earth and L the length of string wrapped round it. then: L = ΠD

Let the extra length be ΔL and the extra diameter be ΔD,

Then the new length for the greater diameter is L + ΔL = Π(D+ΔD)

So, ΔL = Π(D+ΔD) - ΠD i.e. ΔL = ΠΔD

Putting ΔD = 6ft, the extra length ΔL = 18.86 ft.

Using a bit of lateral thinking to get an aproximate answer. We assume the circle is a square. Each of 4 sides are 3 feet longer.
Total extra length is approximately 12 feet.

You are adding 6feet to Pi = 18.825ft

6 x 3.142 = :roll:
