Hi,

Basically i have some minor re-pointing to do on the front elevation of my property but I do not have the time available to repoint in the correct fashion.

Would it be possible to repoint the brickwork using mastic just to tide me over the winter period and then complete the job properly once the spring arrives?

The bottom of my house is painted brown so using brown mastic would not be noticable but would it do the job for now?

Many thanks

Lee

How bad is the pointing now? The trouble with using mastic as a temporary measure is the problems you will get trying to remove it (and it will look odd). Can't you leave it until you can do it properly?

My last house was re-pointed completely in mastic, it came out no problem with an angle grinder and diamond disk although the dust was much more colourful than mortar!

Hi,

The property is mainly rendered apart from the below the ground floor windows where the bricks are displayed (painted over by previous owner) and the pointing is very sandy (large amounts of sand appears to be a common problem with these properties as the internal rendering and plaster just falls of the walls as it has never really adhered itself to the walls due to the wrong consistency). The pointing is now crumbling away and you can see damp around the the walls where the pointing is throuhgout the year. During heavy downfall of rain you can spot water ingress within the hallway (where the pointing is missing).

This was not really a problem last year but we have had the hallway, stairs and landing plastered boarded (old render removed) and skimmed this summer and do not want any damage to be caused to these during the winter.

Are you basically saying that in the long term mastic would not save me time? and that really i should make the time to do this with mortar? What is the minimum temperture in which I can complete pointing as i really dont see it being more than a days work.

Lee

Really it needs to be warmer than 4 degrees C for pointing with mortar.

If I was you I'd just point it with troweling mastic and forget about replacing it with mortar for a few years.
