Hi chaps,

As I've mentioned on another thread, I'm currently planning to refit my girlfriends kitchen.

She's got an integrated gas hob which needs disconnecting and reconnecting once the new units are built.

I'm going to get a plumber/gas fitter to do the reconnection for me once the new hob is in place, but I'm wondering if it would be legal for me to remove the old hob and cap the pipe myself, to save getting the pro in twice.

Got plenty of experience with copper water pipes, so know my way around the blow torch, compression fittings etc, but not touched gas pipes before.

Gas work, is Gas work ,is Gas work and must be carried out by a gsr person,it is illegal and dangerous for you to attempt disconnecting and capping your hob,it really is not worth the risk

Hobs usually have a gas tap to isolate them so check that out first. I am sure that the RGI's would never be able to advise you on the DIY procedure you have suggested. In the old days you would just turn it off and cap it but times are different now and you have to think of the consequences if things went wrong.

there are only two things that can go wrong for you, if you are useing a copper blank when you are soldering it, you might set fire to the gas in the pipe, this can burn all the way to the meter like a fuse and the meter can explode taking out the gable end of the house,
or 2 . you might not seal the cap properly and overnight the room will fill with gas to the proportions that make the room a giant bomb, and when someone swithes the light on, the whole house is demolished, next door on both sides is 1/2 demolished and the whole street have broken windows and left, structurally unsound, so you loose all your friends, spend some time in jail and your house and all you own taken from you in compensation claims,

thats the scaremongery bit they teach us in acs assessments, read the ' is diy gas work illegal' then make up your own mind, :?

Thank you gas guys it's nice to see the experts self moderate so well on this site :thumbright:

It seems a very grey area whether it's illegal but it's certainly inadvisable
