I spend 5 hours each Monday, Wednesday and Friday in hospital, hooked up to a dialysis machine. I'd like to pass the time surfing the web, replying to emails etc. There's no internet connection available in the hospital; my kindle shown no wifi networks.

What do you guys suggest as a solution, including a laptop or similar?

Are you allowed to have a mobile phone powered up whilst in the dialysis unit? I know that some places in hospitals now allow them while others don't.

If so, then the answer might well be a netbook or sub-laptop plus a 3G dongle - assuming there's a 3G signal available in there.

I've got a Samsung N150 which I got for about £270 last year. I use that mainly when I'm working away to connect to the internet in hotel rooms.

You could also go the tablet PC route, but if you're wanting to be answering lots of e-mails then I think a proper keyboard would suit you better.

iPad

They may 'sell' internet access - lets face it, they try to rip off most people for TV sets etc so internet access is another potential money spinner.

Inky has the only reasonable solution - if your Kindle doesn't register wi-fi and the hospital don't 'sell' it then 3G is the only other way around this problem.

I have a 3 Mobile Dongle for my laptop.
If you know the postcode of the hospital, check the coverage of 3 on the link above.
I used it to good effect in a hotel and also in the hospital when on chemo.

Shop around if you are going to get a dongle,there are big differences in price and then make sure its gonna work in the hospital.

Oh well, mustn't grumble. Mine gets carried around in my tool case, is used daily, and has behaved itself flawlessly the whole time.
