Hi All

We supply the usual BZP universal exhaust pipe clamps, but we were recently asked to to knock up some in Stainless Steel.

They are obviously more expensive, but I wondered what you thought about the idea? Do you think there could be a market? I have searched google and cannot really find anything similar

I would really appreciated the thoughts if you people who are into this kind of DIY

Thanks

PS

I don't want to use a forum like this to spam / push sales so I won't put a link to the products - ask if you are interested - it is really just your thoughts I am after at this stage

Thanks for not spamming :thumbright:

The problem with stainless is that it binds like mad, so if you get stainless screws that thread into stainless it can be extremely difficult to remove them.

I often work on machines that have stainless bolts that fit into tapped stainless holes and they can be a real pain and the holes often need re-tapping.

I'm not familiar with exhaust clamps, would these use stainless bolts?

I suggest that one would only require a stainless connector to 'match' to a stainless exhaust system thereby retaining the aesthetics. If the market doesn't yet include this facility it is because the demand is so low? Perhaps, if you target 'car customising' sites you may find the market potential you are seeking.

Hi both, thanks for the input

Stainless could indeed be for the aesthetics, or because of the longevity

Our main business is pipe supports made from stainless steel. As such we have a large range of stainless steel U-bolts. The U-bolts have threaded ends and have nuts on them - there is very rarely a problem. We use T316 and T304 stainless mainly (A4 and A2 grade)

But I am not an engineer or car expert

An exhaust clamp is basically a U-bolt with a backing plate and I guess would bolt the exhaust pipe to the underside of the car?

If I was fitting an exhaust and had the choice I'd go for stainless, but if they seize they cannot be easily gas axed off, perhaps this is why BZP ones are used?

Or it could just be the price :dunno:

How much are the stainless compared to BZP?

actually i think it's a good idea that you ought to sell to the manufacturers.

example: -

i have a Peugeot 207 GTi, there are so many design faults with it it is unreal. one of the faults is they have a badly designed exhaust bracket near the back wheel. as soon as you drive in wet conditions the spray of water goes forward, lands on this bracket. the bracket is angled forward and downwards, guess where the water pools and rusts? it took 3 years to rust it away completely.

I'd look to redesign the whole clamp to make it 'smoother' and less 'clunky'. For a showpiece exhaust system a standard u-bolt clamp fixing spoils the complete look.

we have sold a lot of http://www.ralco-tubings.co.uk/hoses/search/search-pa-ri-stainless-steel-band-clamp-type-1a-item-963.html to motorcyclists, some have gone for the single bolt but there is only 3mm movement on those while you can get 10mm on the double bolt type
