Hi..moved into 150yr old cottage with very squeaky stairs..underneath is accessible to strip wedges out but unfortunately have all been painted in..I've screwed through the treads into the riser but hasn't worked..half of the treads look like they may be splitting but haven't but they flex at the front which is a cause of squeak....if I put another tread over the top..what could I use to glue/cement it down to fill the uneveness out before I screw them down and do you think it would work....or is it a new staircase

Have you tried screwing the bottom of the riser to the back of the tread?

If that doesn't work, you could fit a carriage beam and then some glue blocks to the joint between the top of the riser and the tread, (probably easier to do the glue blocks first).

often the problem is carpet fitters who think its ok force the carpet between the back off the tread and riser damaging the structure and reducing support for the back edge off the treads casing flexing and rubbing where surfaces touch rather than a solid tread
as ajay says you need to reconnect them to make them structurally supporting and solid
