I am told that there is an automatic spell checker which will give a red wavey line under any non recognised workd.
But I dont see this and I dont find anywhere to turn it on in my profile.
So what do I do to get it?

As far as I know there isn't a generic one that will work across all programs. What programs are you using?

I think his enquiry is about the forum, rather than computers in general.

Sorry, yes I am asking about this forum.
Surprisingly, there does not seem to be any topic relating to forum use that I could find.
In any case the computer geeks are likely to be the ones that would know the answers.
My problem arises because, surprisingly, the site owner has decided to limit one's ability to correct spelling and grammar problems to only 30 minutes. During that time I am likely to be answering the phone, answering email or eating or watcing TV or even just living!

The 30 minute rule is common on most forums, and is designed to prevent spammers adding links at a later time/day.

DIYnot dont seem to have any problem in that respect as they allow all time editing!
Since only the OP can edit a posting then any spammers should be potentially identifyable on their first posting.

Tony Diynot have a time limit on editing posts. Have you activated the spell checker yet, as it's not working.

Agile wrote: Sorry, yes I am asking about this forum As previously mentioned, it depends on what program you are using. I am using Firefox to surf the WWW and the spell checker is under Edit > Preferences > Advanced and then check the box saying 'Check my spelling as I type' Scruff has shown where it is on another browser - generally there are all in the same place but I havent used a variety of brower programs

Agile sfaia there is no inbuilt spellchecker on this site...however if you are using Firefox or Internet explorer you can download the google toolbar which has a built in spellchecker...though even that can't tell the difference between mm and m... here http://www.google.com/intl/en_uk/toolbar/ff/index.html

I am mostly using the AOL package and not IE or Firefix. thescruff wrote: John, I must disagree with you about editing on DIYnot. Furthermore I can prove that I am correct. I have found a posting about spelling that I made on the 26th June 2004 and I have made a special edit on it just for you! Agile wrote: I am mostly using the AOL package and not IE or Firefix. I didnt realise people still used AOL. I'm not sure if they have a spell checker built into their browsing program or not. Have a look under Tools > Options (if they have drop down menus). The trouble with AOL is that they have their own custom made packages which are an absolute nightmare to get rid of - had to completely format mates PC's who had the misfortune of signing up with them.

All of the ISPs used to take over the PC!
Are you old enough to remember Freeserve?
The current AOL does not intefere with anything unless you want it to.
It has a good spell checker on the email but not on a browser.
DIYnot has a spell checker built in.
This site probably could have one too as they are both based on the same system.
