I have a solar panel I want to mount on my garage roof, but I'm not sure if there's a way to do this and keep the roof properly sealed. The roof is plywood with a felt cover, not sure exactly what type of felt, but it's black and green with loose stones on top.

My basic idea would be to use some angle brackets bolted through the plywood into the beams underneath and attached the panel to the brackets. I'd have to cut some slits in the felt so I can peel it back to access the bare wood and then re-seal the felt back down, as well as seal the bolt heads somehow I guess. However, I've never worked with felt roofing before so I'm not sure if this is even feasible and what sealants etc. I would need. Can anyone provide some advice on this?

Raoul.

Hi Raoul,

Fitting solar or PV units to a flat roof is inadvisable (unless you live on the equator). South facing 30 deg pitch is best.

I'd take the tails to the side of the garage if possible and leave the roof intact. Flat roofs have a habit of leaking when punctured.....
