hi all.
had 2 plumbers round to quote for moving bathroom upstairs and both say that the downpipe which is currently being used as a rainwater pipe is actually a soil pipe originally and they can tap into this when putting bathroom upstairs. im happy to believe that it was originally a soil pipe but didn't know if you could have rainwater and shi-ite going into same pipe?
thanks for your help

I think they're talking Cr@p.

What size pipe is it, and can we see the bottom or where it's connected.

It may well go into the drain or it may have a separate rainwater drain or soak-away, get it wrong and face a very big, pollution bill/fine

Only way to test is to lift an inspection chamber cover and pour some coloured water down the rainwater pipe.

The pipe would have to be changed to 110mm if there's a WC going into it.

I would check with the water Authority before you do anything.

thanks scruff, don't mind changing the pipe to 110mm, not sure i wanna open a can o worms informin water authority though but i'll happily lift inspection chamber and see if its its running into it.
as i understand it, if it is indeed a soil pipe the guttering shouldn't be running into?
if thats the case i'll happily move the rainwater downpipe and change the one thats there to a soil pipe?
let me know if im anywhere near the mark, thanks again

Lets put it this way.

If you pollute the water course/rivers, you could easily be looking at a £20k fine, and a clean up bill of half a million plus.

I thought the local water authority had to be informed when putting in an extra loo or moving one, anyway.

already informed building control- never mentioned it, just said fill this form in hand over money and we'll check the work once it starts- even got it half price cuz doing a loft conversion as well, i told them i was unsure of soil pipe arrangement they just said get a qualified plumber and give me a list of tradesmen local. 2 of which i have had round. both shrugged shoulders and went yep no probs thats a soil stack anyway i'll boss into that.
not tryin to cut corners but there is a lot of scaremongering goes on about building control when in fact they were very easy going about everything, give me loads of leaflets to help( mostly about loft fire safety) and said crack on.
reason im on here is because i dont want to cut corners but don't want unecessary worry either.

No worry if you prove it's a main drain.

The building are there to help, and they will all the time you play with their ball.

Why do you ask

A mod would comment if it had been edited.
