Afternoon all,

I'm preparing my small bedroom for a bit of redecorating. After adding an extra socket last week, I have now ripped out the horrible built in wardrobe to discover there was another socket behind that already :)

Image

As you can see, there are 4 twin and earths going to this socket.
And they are obviously not very securely screwed in as one live and one earth are pulling out of the terminal.

Now, two should be the ring main, so will the other two be spurs off this socket? I assuming the two with the earths in one sleaving will be the ring main. Are the spurs going to be DIY jobs, or would the original electricial have put in a spure for something?

I can see where one of them goes, but the rest are a mystery.

Are there special sockets designed to take 4 wires per terminal?
Or is this always a bad idea?

I could try disconnecting one set at a time and then try every socket in the house to seee where the second spur goes, (if it is a spur to another socket)

Any ideas?

Thanks
J

Probably.

Don't assume - find out.

WITH THE POWER OFF use your multimeter to find which 2 lives have low resistance continuity - they'll be the ring cables.

Maybe the whole lot is a DIY job. A proper electrician wouldn't have installed 2 spurs from the same socket.

No and yes.

A reasonable idea. Might not be sockets though - might be supplying an FCU.

Thanks for the reply.

I did a bit more testing yesterday with the multimeter, and have determined what each of the spurs is for.
One goes to a socket in the coat cupboard below that room. Where I have a rechargable torch plugged in.
The other goes to another socket in the same room.

I can't see how the first socket would be a DIY one as laying the wire would mean lifting the floor, or tearing down the ceiling. There's no sign that either of these have been done.

I can see the second one is a DIY job, and I can now see where the wall has been chased out to get the wire in. This socket has an integrated 13A fuse, so it's actually a fused spur.

Thanks again for the advice.
