I bet Thescruff can remember the old cars with a handle on the front for 'winding' them out of snowdrifts, we also used them for starting before the luxury of electric starters.

Just thought of this when I helped my neighbour get her car off her drive.


She would not listen and put it in 2nd and let the engine do the work, NO it was foot flat to the floor and spin like hell.

She wondered why my auto had no probs, 'tis the way you drive them!!

My dad had a Citroen estate with one - hard work if you were a tiddler like I was.

Anybody else let their tyres down about half way to get more grip. Found it works pretty well.

You could damage your arm using them handles.

Not if you know how to use them.

I know quite a few that had broken wrists etc from the kickback

Only ever used starting handles on plant, dumpers and such. Quite a kick back if you flick the lever down too early

You don't have a little lever on cars, just have to get the choke in the right place, depending on the weather.

Do cars still have chokes.

Heee! I remember them well!
Always keep your thumb the same way round the handle as your fingers in case it kicked back.

Lever is a diesel thing isn't it? decompression or something...?

Used a starting handle plenty of times on old Morris 1000's and the A35 (which I passed my test in) really underestimated tool.

Number of situations a starting handle would have sorted since then - been replaced by jump leads which requires a certain amount of co-operation from a fellow motorist - if you can ever find one when you need them. I suppose transverse engines don't help either!
