when i first bought my laptop it was extremely fast, but now it seems to take a while to load up. the internet and any programs i use are still quite fast, its just the start up. i know as i install programs updates etc it takes up space but i didnt know if theres anyway of making it quicker?

have you de-fragged it (under system tools)? That will help

If you do not alread have Ccleaner then download and install Ccleaner
When installing, watch out for the tick box that will install the Yahoo Toolbar if left ticked
Once installed, click Check For Updates (bottom right of the screen).

When installed and updated, click Options in the left toolbar abd click Cookies.
In the list, 'Cookies to be deleted' look for all the cookies that you have for signing onto your regular sites like UHM.
Hold down the CTRL key and left click on each cookie that want to save. When highlited, click on the right arrow >> to move them over to the 'Cookies to be saved' list.

Having saved all your wanted cookies, click the Cleaner button on the left.
Cleaner -> Windows Tab
Tick IE to put a tick in all, then Untick Autocomplete form history
Tick Win Explorer to put a tick in all.
Tick System to put a tick in all, then Untick Clipboard, Start Menu Shortcuts & Desktop
Shortcuts.
Leave Advanced unticked.

Cleaner -> Application Tab
Tick All Boxes except Saved Form Information if there is a non-IE browser section.

Then click Analyze and let it list all the dross that it will remove.
Click Run Cleaner and don't bother with the backup, let it remove all the temp files etc.


Once done, find your defragmenter and run it.

Then try a reboot and see if it is a bit faster.

Next tell us which version of Windows you are using, XP, Vista or Win7?

We can then instruct on checking your startup list using Ccleaner tools.
You could reopen Ccleaner and go to Tools -> Startup and list all that is in the list with Enabled next to it. Just list the things under Key and Program.

hi dave, thanks alot for that, i've downloaded and followed all the instructions on ccleaner. then used the defragmenter its made a bit of difference, not a great deal though, anything else i could try? i'm running vista

EHtRay .exe Traybar process for MS Media Centre

TOMTOMHOME.exe GPS software not needed at startup

Igfxtray graphics but non essential

hp health check scheduler disable using the instructions HERE

Soundmaxpnp Only required if you have custom settings for your sound system. (sound effects etc)

Applesyncnotifier Disable but if you have problems with iPod , re-enable at startup

groove monitor remove. How to get rid of GrooveMonitor.exe?
If you want to remove or block GrooveMonitor.exe, you have to do the following:

* Go to Start > Run or hit Win+R keys together
* Type msconfig. Hit Enter.
* Go to the ‘Startup’ tab.
* Uncheck GrooveMonitor

quicktime tasks disable

Sunjava update sched disable.



Leave all the rest for now. See how you get on with it now.

Try Dave's suggestion first and see if that speeds things up enough. If you think it's still not fast enough you could try turning off SuperFetch. This is a technology that Microsoft introduced with Windows Vista. The idea is to load frequently used programs into memory so they load quicker. I've always left it enabled, but I know some people that have turned it off because it slows down their machines when Windows starts, particularly on laptops which generally have slower hard disks than desktops When you boot your machine SuperFetch loads your frequently used programs into memory and this can cause your machine to slow down. The down side to turning it off is that some of the programs that you use reguarly may take longer to load.

It's easy to turn SuperFetch on and off, test to see if it helps and if not turn it back on. To turn SuperFetch off and on, click Start then types "services.msc" into the search box and press Enter. Scroll down the list of services to the one called Superfetch. Right-click on the service and set the Startup Type to "Disabled" in order to turn off Superfetch. Reboot your machine and see if it makes any difference. If you want to turn it back on repeat the above, but set the Startup type to "Automatic".

One of the many improvements in Windows 7 is that Superfetch doesn't cause as much of a slow down at startup as in Vista.

Hi, as an extra tip, if use defrag using the windows default one, run it 3 times in succession. The first time may take hours the 2nd takes mins the 3rd takes seconds. The windows defrag isn't that good so doing it 3 times makes it better.

There is a free one I use made by the same group that do ccleaner called defraggler, that's really good and you can view the make up of the files on your disk so you can see if there are any unneccessary ones taking up loads of space.

Defraggler is useful as it gives you a list of the fragmented files. Often, you will find that system files such as the swap file (pagefile.sys), the system restore files and the hibernation files become badly fragmented, and it isnt so easy to defragment those as they are in use. The easiest way to achive this is to use "PageDefrag" - part of the sysinternals suite from Microsoft, which is a free download. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx you can set it to run at next boot, or to run at every boot.

If you have less than 2GB ram, it is also worth upgrading as some earlier laptops had 1GB and it is really isnt adequate for Vista.

you may have a alot of virus's they can leech your connection and slow you down also if there is anyone on your'e connection downloading alot you could be effected by it. Also you may have been capped by your provider for downloading more than you are paying for. The other problem could be RAM too low or you are not using a WEP key on your connection so people in your area are taking your'e connection. Hope this helps
