hi all

i've got a SIMRAN transformer 220v -> 110V together with a hedge trimmer (110v) that was donated to me by an old neighbour who went back to the states.

The hedge trimmer is great for my occasional use, but the fuse has gone on the transformer.

I've not got any manuals for it, and I can't find the manufacturers website, and it seems that there are 1000s of companies called SIMRAN.

I've taken a picture of the transformer and fuse. The thing is rated to 500Watt. Any idea on what fuse I can use?

Bendecko

There should be markings on the metal end of the fuse giving a rating...if you can read them great...if not try taking the fuse to a store such as Maplins..they should have them in stock or an equivalent.

That looks like a 20mm glass fuse, probably a 5A slo-blow (if fitted on the secondary 110V side) or 3A (if in the primary 240V side).

The fuse protects the LEAD not the transformer.

wow that was quick, and effective!

it is written on the end of the fuse....

F2.5AL250V

i guess thats 250V... what about the rest, 2.5 A?

i'm in a little village high up in the pyrenees and was going to try to buy it online for postage, as the local shops might not stock this.

regards and thanks
ben

The F is for fast (as in fast blow) the 2.5A indeed stands for 2.5 Amp..And the 250 is the voltage (give or take)

:dunno: What the L stands for...and I don't think you are likely to have a Maplins in the Pyrennees...

You'll probably find a pack of 10 will cost less than £3 or £4 plus postage..

'F' may be the wrong type - you want 'T' (timed) or 'AS' (anti-surge).

Transformers have a high switch-on surge current which is why the 'F' (fast) fuse probably blew in the first place. Transformer-powered equipment usually take 'AS' or 'T' (slo-blow or 'timed delay') fuses to allow for this surge.

As KE says they should really be slow blow fuses for the surge loading. Slow blow at £1 each but you must order min of 10:

Well... I'm 'blown' away by your responses. Er.. sorry about that.

Thanks for your time and expertise.

I normally buy items from ebay, you just do advanced search and put in those sellers that are prepared to send abroad - a few do, or things come direct from China.

Maplin stopped doing European deliveries a year or two ago. Shame as I used to buy a lot of stuff from them.

Thanks again guys!
