Background I live in a ground floor flat with mains water cold and a gravity fed hot water system from a feeder tank in the loft some 8 metres above to a heating cylinder at ground floor. Its heated off an immersion heater (economy7) so theres no boiler to speak off.
Question I currently redoing my bathroom and plan to install a separate shower with an exposed thermostatic shower valve and flexible hose over my bath. My question is can i actually do this? I currently have a mixer tap with shower attachment which works fine although i don't really need to turn the cold water on, as the pressure is so good it would cancel out the hot water if i turned it on any more. I have read in places that you need to have balanced feeds for the shower to work. Is this correct?
If you guys dont think i can do this do you have any alternatives. I don't want to have an electric shower.
Thanks for the responses in advance.
Jonathan

No reason at all, how you go about it depends on the mains pressure, but you can fit a pressure reducing valve if need be.
Buy a thermostatic valve and you should be fine.

Better add, some showers require a single non return valve on the hot, to prevent backflow into the cylinder, please check the instructions or ask.

Just read through Tritons FAQ section.
"Do you make a mixer shower that I can install onto a gravity hot water supply and mains cold water supply?
We do not recommend installing our mixer showers onto unbalanced supplies of this type. While most of our mixer showers incorporate a single check valve in each inlet there is always a risk that debris may enter the mixer and prevent the check valve in the hot inlet from sealing off. Should this occur mains water at pressure will flow into the hot supply forcing water in the cylinder back into the cold water cistern potentially causing water to overflow from the cistern and damaging property."
I wonder then if like you said "thescruff" I fit another check valve on the hot this could prevent any problems. Imagine they must just be covering them selves for water regulations.

Thanks for the help. The reason i was looking at Triton as they are cheap. I dont really want to spend a fortune on a shower but i release the set up i have is not right for the shower i was intending to get.
I had a look at the Jetstream and although it is made for the job it looks horrid to me. I was looking for something more minimal and hidden.
Now when looking around the forum i found some one mention Trevi which i search and came up with the Trevi Boost (E9005AA) i take it this is what i need. Its expensive so will have to keep searching i guess.
Thanks for the help.

I think you'll be looking at a couple of hundred so look around for sale bargains.
I still favour Mire for most jobs.

something like this would do. You have a higher than normal hot anyway, and as said you can always fit a pressure reducing valve, to lower the cold if necessary. http://www.splashdirect.com/Showers/Sho ... &utm_term={keyword}

Cheers. That looks pretty reasonably priced and pleasing to the eye. I think i will look more closely at a Mira shower unit and if i have trouble with the unmatched pressure i wack a pressure valve in there to reduce the cold pressure to a more suitable pressure. They will work out far cheaper than getting a Trevi boost or similar.

That's quite a good price, RRP is about £163.00

It is a good price. Thought i'd contact Mira to ask if they could be of any help and they replied with, Please accept this as confirmation that Mira Showers do not manufacture any showers whatsoever that are suited to a mains cold / gravity-fed hot supply. Therefore, without making alterations to the plumbing system the only type of shower we manufacture suited to your needs is an electric shower which would heat the cold mains water on demand. All of our current electric showers can be viewed on our website by following the link below.I have research the Trevi Boost now and there technical literature states the hot water feeder tank can only be a maximum of 3m. Mine is more like 5 or 6 meters. I'm not sure it is suitable for my setup now. http://www.ideal-standard.co.uk/InstallationInstructions/trevi%20boost%20TS22.pdf
