keep getting a message bubble popping up telling me an attempt to change my search settings had been blocked, getting a bit irritated by it now
how do I find out what is causing this & how do I stop it without resorting to percussion maintenance?

VI,
What program is doing the popups?
What is your default search engine?
What browser are you using and which version?
What antimalware, antispyware programs do you have installed?

For the time being:

Please download MalwareBytes' AntiMalware

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:

o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
o Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

* Then click Finish

If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.

* Once the program has loaded, select > Perform Quick Scan, then click > Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click > OK, then > Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click > Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Save this log to My Documents in case it is needed for reference.
Reboot as required.

Dave, a magnifying glass icon appears from taskbar "Search Settings Notification. a program was blocked from changing your default search settings"
default is google but when firefox updated to 5.0 it changed to yahoo, yahoo has now been removed from the options list but i still get the notification
I am running advanced systemcare (free), it has malware fighter, I have clicked icon but nothing appears to be happening

VI,
Open Firefox -> Tools -> Addons -> Extensions.
Look for any mention of Yahoo and if there, Disable it then Remove it.

Download and run Malwarebytes as in my last post, just incase it is malware that is trying to get Yahoo back as default search engine.

Have you got java console 6.0.01 as it is not compatible with Firefox 5 and should have been disabled.

I un-installed 5 and then downloaded and re-installed it as I was having problems the first time.

Vi,
You could do what John suggested and remove FFv5 and then reinstall it. When uninstalling do NOT click to remove your profile though.
