I have just experimented with cracks, about 4 months ago had to repair two cracks in my ceiling and a few in the plaster board wall, the walls and ceiling were always papered but I stripped down and painted
Anyway,I grooved out the cracks with my scraper about 4/5 mm deep and pva'ed the recess made, then applied solvent free grip fill, let it go off and the filled over the top and repainted,so far ,no problem and no reappearance of any hair line cracks

ps Some of the wall cracks were because boards were slightly loose ,so screwed through grove created before filled with grip fill

have tried the crack tape that you can paint over and obviously the crack does not reappear but you can get a visible line appear sometimes were crack is behind the tape

Anyway will see how it goes with trial, but as you say you can spend a lot of time trying to blend into wall after using scrim

Sam.............I use my plastering trowel for doing repairs in the same way but they blend in just fine. reason being that the trowel leaves a bigger area of feathering in than normal filling knifes.

Give that a try and you will be amazed at the difference in the end result.

Thanks for your reply's. I have a Marshall town spachular (spelling not a strong point of mine lol) I can get it decent I fill twice and make it about 5times bigger than the repair area! Its just if you really look its not a totally invisible repair!
I was thinking of using "kp crack tape" looks alot thiner than scrim tape! Just not sure how to use, fill crack then apply or just stick over crack!
