I have in my possession a 1968 School dinners issue recipe book. Admittedly, they are for 100 portions but they will reduce! If anyone has a yen for something last tried in school, I have a recipe for it. Feel free to post requests here!

Easy!

Reduce to desired amount, this serves 100!

Mix 8lb flour with 3 lb suetAdd 6 oz baking powder, 2 oz mixed spice, 2lb dried milk, 4 lb sugar and 4 lb currants.
Mix with water (5 pints) to a soft consistency and place in greased tins. Steam for 2-2 1/2 hours.

Sounds like it wasn't cooked properly. Shameful.

Gristle can be an essential ingredient of some dishes , adding flavour and texture.

Tommorrow night I shall be eating a beef stew. I get shin from my butcher that's got plenty of gristle streaks in it. Simmer with veg for a couple of hours, then in the fridge for a day (so it's there now). Reheat for dinner tomorrow. The reheating adds flavour. You get an additional dish too: Soup.
