100% agreed..

myself and my next-door-neighbour both bought new laptops at about the same time (Windows 8).. within 3 months his was almost unusable.. but if he gets an e-mail from some-one he doesn't know he'll quite happily click on "Download attachment" without even stopping to think...

In the same way that Blakeys friend thought "of course Microsoft are phoning me to sort out my computer"

Despite the fact that Microsoft have no way of knowing what your phone number is...... :?

I am enjoying and learning from all the reply's to this thread, even though I don't understand half of the terminology used, from some of the responses I am sure you think it was me that was nearly scammed  , I can honestly say if it had been I would have definitely owned up, if only to boast that at this time of the year there was still £4500 in the bank that her indoors had not spent :huray:, also if it had been me I think they would probably got away it, Last post asked how Microsoft would have known his number :dunno: how do I get calls about PPI, Accidents that I have never had, etc, etc,.

May I suggest, if you don't understand...........ask, its the only way to learn.

As for how do call centres get your number, that's easy, they buy them. (Your name and number) I knew some one who did it, he buys names and phone numbers the calls them and tries to sell his wares. I should point out, he only calls commercial premises and tries to sell the service his company provide. He told me he can buy numbers that are in a specific area / county. He wouldn't say how much, but he did its not a lot.

Sorry I don't understand what you are saying.

I will try and clarify what I have said previously.

How would microsoft know the phone number?

There is an industry that makes money by selling on peoples details. I.e your name and phone number.
(They don't just sell yours, they sell names and numbers by the thousands)

BUT, microsoft don't call people offering to fix your pc, I believe that is more to the point.
