Just wandered what Zinsser Coverstains like for rolling on ceilings? I use it by brush a lot but it can be pretty thick stuff to work with sometimes. Don't think 5l would stretch to far without thinning would it?

Trying it for a change from BIN as the customer has asthma, however she still
Smokes like a chimney. Yes I know!

Also, anyone tried any waterbased stainblockers, like Crown's PBS Or Dulux stainblock plus?
Can't see how they would work on Nicotine! :dunno:

Ta, NS

Waterbased stain blockers have failed me on every occasion I have used them.

Try knotting solution.

Have to say i used coverstain the other week and it was setting the smoke alarms off. Johnstones do a zinsser bin copy which smells less than bin i think its quick dry primer sealer. I have used ultra primer sealer again johnstones not much smell and rolled ok

I've never been let down by Dulux Trade Stain Block Plus on nicotine stains yet. Sometimes it will take 2 coats, but provided you wash every square inch with sugar soap, there should be no probs. And it's a lot easier to be around than Coverstain (or God forbid - BIN) :puke: I'm no lover of Dulux Trade as most of you probably have guessed, but this is a very good product. Get it at Tradepoint though. :thumbright:

As best as I'm aware, Stain Block works by drawing the stain into the binder and sealing it there. I've also noticed that it dries to a very hard shell. If the nicotine staining is REALLY bad, it may be safer to stick with a shellac primer, but assuming you can wash enough off, I'd still try an acrylic blocker first (I really can't stand the smell of these strong Zinsser paints)

Shellac based stain blockers will deal with tar, hence knotting and zinsser bin will do the job, but the solvent for them is meths I think, hence the smell. More advanced products may do the job, but not as effectively, hence the two coats.

Quick replies folks!

TJRD, I've used the Johnstones shellac and found it just as strong as BIN, but it is good!

Dynamod, any idea how much you pay for 5l the Stain Block plus? Might try that.

Really, the solution is for the customer to give up the disgusting bloody habit.

Why should we expose ourselves (unecessarily) to all these carginogenic solvents?

Make the customer put the stuff on?

Anyone else ever caught a customer smoking (normally when you arrive in the morning) in the very room you've just spent the best part of a day washing and sealing? That one really gets my back up, although in fairness I suppose it's their house.

I'm sure I heard somewhere that a customer isn't meant to smoke up to an hour if someone is working in their house. Something to do with the Clean Air Act possibly? Not sure if the whole of the UK conforms to this though.

I've thinned down the coverstain , to make it more usable when rolling to no detrimental affects fella. Oh and have used stain block plus over nicotine and indeed it does the job :-)

Don't want to sound condescending but you have to be a bit careful with the with the water based stain blockers or they won't work. EG leaving them long enough to cure, following the recoat times and making sure the substrate isn't damp. I'm not sure, but I get the impression that they seem to work better if they dry quickly.

Bin Odourless as Fordy says is a good option. (White spirit clean up).
