Hi there,

I am currently planning to replace my very old ravenheat boiler with a Vaillant and the plumber also suggested that I install TRV's instead of the standard rad valves that I have on all my rads.

I am looking at the Drayton TRV 4 model, they are supplied either with or without the lockshield. Do I need to buy the more expensive version with Lockshield or can I keep the existing valve on one side of the rad?

Many thanks

You only need to fit the TRV.

Thanks for that, just another query, the plumber also that I need not bother with a TRV for the bathroom? any reason why this would be.

Depends how it's connected and whether it's used as a by-pass rad.

Your plumber sounds a bit out dated

You should have trv's on every rad except the one in the room that the room thermostat is in, to comply with current energy efficiency regulations.

If you want the bathroom rad on all the time, just leave the trv on max.

How old are your lockshield valves? If ancient, it could be worth considering replacing them as well in case they start leaking.

It will be a lot cheaper as part of the main job, rather than a seperate job later

Hi there,

Thanks for all the replies,

My aim is to do as much as possible before the boiler swap, hence my questions, all the rads currently have standard rad valves. The plumber merchant did mention that TRVs were now a requirement on new installations and seeing as am updating myine thought it best to go all the way.

Thanks

Yes best to swap them all for TRV's in that case, and just leave the radiators in the room with the room stat.

As Dave said if the Lockshield valves are old and worn, now would be a good time to change them as well.

Really sorry, but am a bit confused  , you mention that the existing lockshield valves may need replacing, I dont have any lockshield valves just standard rad valves. I suspect this may be regarded as the same thing

The downstairs valves are pretty new as I replcaced them with chrome fittings when I decorated the rooms. The bedrooms probably need replacing in which case I would like to re-use the valves that had been replaced on the downstairs rads

A lockshield and a wheelhead are indeed the same thing with a different cap :thumbright:

In an ideal world you want the TRV on the flow to each radiator, so time spent getting it right would be worth the effort, normally you could just run the boiler and see which end gets hot first.
