I have replaced lots of light fittings before but this one has me stumped. There are three light fittings on our landing - with three switches controlling them. Two of the fittings replaced easily and worked well. The third has a multitude of wires which I have arranged in accordance with several diagrams I have seen.

The blue from the light fitting is wired to the black (with a red sleeve) switch wire.

The brown from the light fitting is wired to the two black neutral wires.

There are three red wires (which I presume go to the other switches and the other fittings) which I have put into a connector block together.

The result is that the light fitting I am working on works perfectly and is correctly wired to all three switchs, but the other two light switches are permanently on. I have tried several different ways to wire this fitting and I just can't get it right.

It is an ikea light fitting (but as the other two worked I am presuming this isn't an issue)

Any ideas would be great

Thanks

Handy woman

This is wrong it should be the brown wire from the light joined into the switch wire and the blue wire from light connected into the neutral.

The light will still work the same but if you have ES lampholders, the threaded part will be live and not the base connection on the lampholder

I suspect one of the red wires which you put into a connector block is also a switch wire going to the other lights, but because you have connected it into a permanent live connection it will remain on permanent.

Remove one of the wires in the connector block and put it in with the brown from the light and try each time until the light works properly.

If you have and know how to use a multimeter then use it to determine the correct wire.

Thanks Markysparky - much appreciated that resolved the problem. Can I be cheeky and ask one more question.

The hall, downstairs wc and lounge are on the same circuit - they all feed from the hall light fitting. I have redone the hall light fitting and it works perfectly :thumbright: but.......

the lounge and Wc no longer work at all. There is a bunch of red wires left over which were connected together, the switch wire is connected to the brown and I have tried putting lots of combinations of the red wires to the brown to no avail.... any ideas?

Thanks

Sounds like a break from the hallway to the lounge and WC. Are you sure there are no loose connections?

There should be only one wire the switch wire connected to the brown wire on the light fitting. Nothing else. and the remaining wires going into a connector block.

The the remaining blacks connect into the neutral of the light.

Are you sure this is right?
