As the title says I'm after some reliable led strips possibly rgbw. I'm using them in our lounge installed in a tray ceiling and also in a new kitchen install.
I can get controllers to change colours etc as needed on the odd occasions but don't want the odd led failing a few months in meaning it all needs replacing.

Obviously I can get strips direct from China but are there any proven reliable brands out there now as it's a few years since they seriously hit the market?

To keep a bulb lit you just use less power This light bulb has been burning for over 100 years however it was originally 60W and now uses 4W and this is the same for most bulbs, if you under drive them, they last longer.

So there are two basic ways to control an LED, one involves an electronic unit which very precisely controls the current, the often switch mode driver will supply say 310 mA to an array of LED's all wired in series, although this should be the best, if a driver fails or if a single LED fails the lot stop working.

The cheap method is to use a capacitor (AC only) or resistor to limit current, with the role out tapes common method is to have three LED's and a resistor connected to 12 volt. White LED will have around 3 volt across it so 3 volt across the resistor.

So maths if LED's always have 9 volt across them, then power with 10 volt and you get half the current to powering at 11 volt as twice the voltage across the resistor.

So if a suppliers gives you a 11 volt power supply rather than the 12 volt it should have, the LED output is clearly reduced, but they are unlikely to fail.

Now colour changing LED strips are only to look nice, never designed to light room, so if you have never seen them with 12 volt you will be satisfied with 11 volt and will last until power supply fails in most cases.

A LED designed to light a room will give out between 60 and 110 lumen per watt, the colour changing LED strips are more like 25 lumen per watt. They are just to look good, same as Christmas tree lights.

So any cheap LED strip, but get a power supply with a lower voltage than normally used.
