It occurred to me last night that I could convert a large windowless cupboard, approx 2m x 2m into a kitchenette. The idea being that kettles could be boiled, things could be warmed up in a microwave, and mugs could be washed and nothing more complicated than that.

It's in an office building in Scotland.

I've had a brief look about but haven't found any obvious rules or regs to guide me. Can anyone point me at something relevant please?

If you arent creating any structural alterations, my guess is it doesnt require any form of building regs.

The electrics will need certifying, although as its commercial, I guess part P isnt relevant.

Sink waste and water supply may be tricky unless there is something nearby.

That was my thinking to though Part P doesn't apply in Scotland.

Don't know if there's a requirement for ventilation though.

microwave kettle forman grill would i suspect be more like a relaxation or area to have a break so just normal habitable room requirements rater than a kitchen where fire and ventilation regs would kick in :dunno:

Relaxation, in my mind, means having at least a seat in there, which there wouldn't be space to do. Definitely a room where you make a cuppa and leave.

It's the lack of a window that makes me wonder if I would need to add an extractor. The cupboard being at least 5m from the nearest external wall and that wall being 600 solid masonry and on a second floor could mean a big bill if venting was necessary.

bedrooms need natural ventilation but dont think it will apply to casual areas where its limited to very short term useuage
is this to give a an area for people to escape from a work situation whilst on a break ??
or just to compliment an already compliant area where breaks can be taken elsewhere :dunno:

It's purely to make a cuppa and wash some mugs etc. Currently there's a kettle in one office and things are washed up in a basin in a toilet which is where crockery seems to live too. Sort of makes sense in my head to separate toilets and washing-up, and the toilets are due a deep refurb, so this might be a juncture worth taking.

I would just go ahead and do it.

Its only going to be an area to boil a kettle and wash some mugs. As its not on an external wall, condensatio is unlikely as the walls will probably alsays be warm. I know a kettle produces a bit of steam, but only for a minute or so. If you wanted to steam a Christmas pudding for 6 hours, then that might be more of an issue.

It sound a better option than washing up in a basin in a toilet :-)
