I didn't say it was better BAS, Nutty professors, inventors etc, dream up things that have never been dreamed up before, therefore you are in unknown territory.

Imagine this geezer chatting to the local HSE bod about this hang glider idea. Well guv it's a metal frame covered in a sheet of plastic that I strap to my back and jump off a 500 foot cliff. Yes guv I have two chances hit the deck at 112MPH or fly like a bird.

HSE bod, sorry geezer but I'm gonna have to insist you ware a fall arrestor. ::b

If the dangers of shorting the output of a power supply take you into unkown territory then it's your knowledge which is at fault.

There's a big difference between territory which is unknown because you're genuinely doing something new, and territory which is unknown to you because of your ignorance of what is already widely known.

And in this case because of ignorance of some really fundamental basics.

So you think that the best way for people to learn about the principles of flight, aerodynamics, space-frame loadings etc is for them to build something in ignorance of all that has been done before and jump off a 500' cliff, do you?

Rotciv - you shorted the output of a half-kilowatt power supply.

That is not the act of a sane or sensible person.

If you want to learn about things by trying any daft idea that occurs to you, without making any attempt beforehand to understand the implications of trying it, then be prepared to join the long list of people who were killed and injured by experimental acts in the brave old world that you and Scruff seem to think was better.

This thread is fast degenerating and getting out of subject therefore from my side this will be the last post.

I agree 100% with your learned opinion that shorting a half kilo-watt power supply was dangerous.(no sarcasm intended)
A value i strongly cherish from the old word is to reprimand the action and not hastily judge and label the person without at least inquiring about the cicumstances in which the action occured.Well here are the facts :

1) Ups was connected to a fused extension chord so that i could swich it on from a distance.
2) It was placed outdoors in a sizable yard where i was the only occupant.
3) I was wearing safety goggles, rubber insulated gloves and had a hefty fire extinguisher at hand.
Diy is a relaxing pastime that i can now indulge in after years of toil building a modest business and i enjoy reading the informative posts on the forum and the good natured banter going on.

Having gotten this off my chest i leave it up to you wheter or not to despatch me to the nearest looney bin.
