Hi, I have registered to ask this question, I have been reading as a guest for a while but I have a rather specific question.

I know nothing about machine tools or their operation and I intend to teach myself but eventually I want to be able to cut a 14mm-ve thread internal and external with the lathe and to be able to cut an oval shape out of ally with the mill.

I would rather get a mill and lathe I can do this on and then teach myself rather than get a beginner's tool and then have to buy a more capable machine when I get more skills.

So can anyone reccomend a lathe that can cut a 14mm -ve thread and a mill with a (don't know if it is called this) dividing table so I can cut curves.

Thanks in advance.

*edit* I have a budget of around £1000, I can stretch it a bit if I have to.

Id beinclined to buy a tap and die for the threads. You can use these in a lathe.

As for the oval, how big?
I think you mean rotary table.

Another thing to consider, is how much room you have, single phase or 3 phase?

The only 14mm-ve tap and die I have found was over £100 for the die and £80 for the tap set, I suppose it would be cheaper if I don't have to buy a top-end lathe.

The oval I need to make to repair my toys is equivalent to a 14mm circle cut across it's diameter and a 2mm x 14mm rectangle inserted in the middle.

Rotary table rings a bell.

Thanks.

*edit*

I've got sort-of garage and a half sized basement for my tools so space isn't a concern, there is a 6' by 6' aperture to get things into the basement too.

I would prefer single phase so I can run it from my domestic supply without further expense.

Thanks a lot.

I got a Proxxon 230 at a tool auction and I will get the separate tap and die set and get learning.
