Hi guys.
Our builder has built a summerhouse at bottom of garden and his electrician has wired it in. It’s got its own CU, couple of lights, 3 sockets intended for garden tools, radio, potentially a small heater in winter.

I’ve noticed that the electrician has used 2.5 t&e from CU to external House wall (about 10m) then 6mm swa outside to summerhouse, about 25m.

Does that sound right? Why does the cable size step up? Should it be 6mm all the way or 2.5mm all the way?

I’m asking here because I don’t have electricians number. I’ve left a voicemail with my builder to give me a ring but want to see if it’s actually a problem before I complain!

Should be same cable diameter for whole run.

Fret not, a forum is a collection of opinions. Above, are mine.

Which is correct? Metre or Meter? Click the link to find out more.

Working on anything electrical? have you got a multi meter? why not? Would you hit a nail with a shoe?

If gloom had a voice, it would be me.

What is the fuse rating for the circuit? Just wondering if the six square mm is overkill, and/or used because it is a long run buried in soil/insulation or similar.

Another possibility is that you may perhaps have misjudged the cable size; the disparity between T&E and robust SWA can be misleading sometimes. Apologies if this is sucking and eggs, but there can even be confusion between cable diameter and conductor area.
