Recently while in Somerset I was asked to look at my Nieces doorbell.
Her house is just 3 years old and they had it built when they won £750k on the lottery.

The set up is 6amp MCCB feeding transformer 6ft away from CU.
Doorbell approx 30ft from transformer, as crow flies.
Door push approx 15ft from bell, as crow flies.
240v at input of TXFR, 15v at output.
15v no load, at doorbell, when door push operated this drops to 1.59v.
Took bell off to check it worked by connecting straight to TXFR, loud ring.
Measured resistance of cable from TXFR to bell found 15 Ohms ?
Looked at cable between TXFR and bell, the Builders Electrician has used 6 core alarm cable, very thin cores.
Why didn't they put the Bell and TXFR next to each other, or at least used 1.0mm cable.

When I looked at the fixings for the bell I found 6 holes for a 2 screw bell, ordinary red plugs used not Plasterboard type.
The plugs pulled straight out and had been cropped to about 1/2in.

As this was a new build I would have expected the person ( won't call them TRADESPERSON) to have made good the redundant holes, and used the correct plugs.

I have told them that rather than rip up the floors and wet underfloor heating to buy a battery powered doorbell.

Am I being Picky or expecting too much in my later years.

My sister had a problem with her downlighters her Lecky couldn't find, all it needed was a new lamp holder like this one.

Rants over.

I'm still none the wiser..but your edit makes nonsense of the last 2 posts..

as for those battery/wireless doorbells they are great till it gets below zero outside or the local taxi/ambulanse turns up and sets the ringer off...or the neighbour has one on the same channel..

It doesn't surprise me.

We work on £1M flats ooops sorry apartments that are 15 years old and falling apart because the sites were rammed with eastern europeans.

Some of these sites I couldn't even get work on, as a qualified craftsmen!

Royal,

2006, I'm working for a Scottish company fitting Labs to PFI's all over the South West. We made the decision to get in 22, 7 year time served Carpenters from Poland. We paid their agency £16.50 per hour for each plus 2 interpretors at £18.00 per hour. I think they received about half of that, the rest taken up by flights, accommodation and vehicles. Best Chippy's I've ever come across! We couldn't get the guaranteed craftsmanship over here!

SSM

Was that decision not financial as well, rather than not been able to get British carpenters. I mean, 2006, that was the height of the property boom wasn't it, could you have got British chippies at the going rate?

It was cheaper to get the Bosnians in, pay them for a bad job and get English trades to snag it. There are still firms operating in exactly the same way.

One very big reason that a lot of English blokes came off the tools.

Who do you think built the Millenium Dome, mainly Eastern Europeans, who do you think are doing the Olympic Site........1 in 7 are English at a push.

I wouldn't even bother my butt to go looking for work on a building site if I was desperate because I have less chance of getting work than a Boso.

Have a listen to what languages are being spoken on sites in London.......not a lot of English being spoken!

The olympic thing was a shame, and a wasted opportunity. All the rubbish when it was announced that London was getting the Olympics, all the jobs it would create, all the apprenticeships. It could have taken the slack from the downturn, instead all the euros got the jobs for half nothing wages and somebody made a lot of money off it.
