Hello,

I'm looking for some advice regarding a tap that will not turn off.

The tap was previously dripping so I replaced the washer about 6 months ago but about two weeks ago it started dripping again. I replaced the washer which did show some signs of wear. Replacing the washer did not fix the problem.

I've been reading up on tap problems using the web and think the tap needs reseating. In the meantime the problem with the tap has got worse. I've tried turning the tap handle harder to try to stop the flow but this hasn't worked and the drip is now a steady flow.

Last night when tightening the tap handle the tap suddenly 'gave' and the flow changed from a steady flow to full flow (i.e. as though the tap were fully open). Continuing to tighten the tap did not cause the water flow to to reduce but turning the handle back (as though opening the tap) did reduce the flow to a steady stream again.

I haven't played around with this too much as I don't want to risk damaging the tap further.

I'm now unsure as to whether the problem with the tap really is a reseating issue or whether there is some other problem with the tap head gear.

Does anyone have any advice on what to try next to fix the tap?

Well maybe you should go for new taps however
seems like due to over tightening you have damaged the tap head, you maybe able to get standard new tap heads to replace existing broken ones and then reseat as you were going to do
