I'm interested in building MIL-SPEC ATA rack-mount boxes. I've have limited experience with metalworking (only the cutting and metal-lathe projects I can barely remember from long ago), and in terms of tools available, I'm NOT knowledgeable whatsoever.
One thing interests me greatly, though. I've heard that certain Mitre saws can cut both wood AND metal--albeit with specially made blades. (MIL-SPEC ATA cases require precision cutting of the framing components.) I'm in the market for a mitre saw in the very near future--and two of DeWALT models which interest me are not inexpensive by any means--thus I would like to know which mitre saws capable of both wood and metal cutting are available (from trusted manufacturers).
I'm also a stickler for safety, so any tips on safety equipment will be greatly appreciated. (I'm going to begin teaching my son the use of basic tools starting next summer, thus it's very important that I teach him the basics in use of safety gear, as well as safety rules, when working with metal.)
Again, any assistance will be greatly appreciated. |

For the UK readers, we are after instructions on how to make a dust and waterproof flight case.
What are you planning to transport?
You say you are not knowledgeable whatsoever but want to make a precision component.
You put the appropriate blade in the saw for the material you want to cut.
A stickler for safety wont cut metal with a mitre saw.
You plan to teach your son? What exactly? You are asking for instructions to make a suitcase out of metal.
Teaching is only possible when the teacher knows what they are doing.
I would love to help, please supply more information, Jason _________________ Stella Stella Stella oy oy oy |

You will need a negative rake fine pitch blade, suitable for aluminium extrusions.
Cant help much with a model of saw.
Safety wise, the saw will have clamps to hold the stock, and use a suitable sacrificial pieces to aid holding the material.
You will also require suitable gloves, googles and ear defenders or ear plugs. _________________ Why isn't the number 11 pronounced onety one? |
