'tis indeed fake.

The scam appears to lead the unsuspecting user to event viewer to point out 'errors' on their system that have been automatically reported back. They then take you to a website to download the 'fix' which installs various combinations of malware.

It's just a twist on existing social engineering scams - if you can't breach the system through email/viri/etc then GET the people to do it for you. This happens with gas/electric meters (switched providers), credit cards/bank, computers and just about anything else people can be persuaded to do. Just takes an air of confidence and it's amazing what you can do.

I once walked into a store and talked the store manager into transfering stock to another branch. He even got staff to help get the 25k's worth of stock into a white van!!! All he got was my name and a vague description - I wasn't even in any kind of uniform, just jeans and tshirt. How I laughed when out of pure chance, someone from group security reconised my description and called me. They were shitting a brick as they thought it was nicked, I just got the wrong cost center so it got bounced back as rejected - their loss.

Sorted it in the end though...How I laughed.
