Hi, first time post, so here goes!

I knocked a load of cracked dashing off our wall after the recent cold weather back in January with the intention of Smooth Rendering at a later date & when the weather picked up and got warmer.

Trying to be sensible I put Thompsons One Coat Water Seal on as i damaged/chipped a few bricks while knocking it off & with the state of the cold waether wanted to protect the wall.

My question is, can i rough on & then smooth render using waterproof in the cement mix?

I have a feeling if i went ahead and did it, it wouldnt stay on for very long and would probarly flake/fall off after a certain amount of time! If this was the case, does anyone know of a different alternative, maybe putting a PVA Glue on the wall then roughing on etc? The wall looks a bit of an eyesore with the scaffolding up to, really needs doing and some advide would be welcomed!

Thanks In Advance

Hello and :welcomeuhm:

To be honest with you I haven't used Thompsons One Coat Water Seal before but i can imagine it being a ball ache though as you've probably killed the suction with it.

Off the top of my head I think your best bet will be to rake out the pointing between the bricks to give your base coat something to grip too. To be sure to be sure you could do that and also take a lump hammer and chisel and just chip off a bit of the face of each brick, or every other brick. That would give you a better key for the job.

Either way don't worry about adding any kind of waterproofer to the surface of the bricks, adding it into the render will be plenty mate :thumbright:

once you have raked out and given it a bit of a bash you could then do a splatter coat of cement little bit of sand and sbr just to give the proper scratch coat summit to bite into, the the end result will only be as strong as the splatter coat or any other coat can get on the tompsons stuff youve used though
